Coal Gasification
IGCC Power Plant Process
Klean Coal’s coal gasification technology, including the IGCC power plant process, provides a clean and efficient way to convert coal into valuable products like syngas, jet fuel, and diesel while reducing emissions.
Learn how the IGCC process we use, which is supplied in part by our partners GE, can utilize a wide varieties of low grade coals to produce cleaner power, while reducing emissions & enabling carbon to captured.
The Klean IGCC Power Plant Overview
IGCC is the cleanest, most efficient means of producing electricity from coal, petroleum residues and other low- or negative-value feedstock’s. The combined cycle system has two basic components. A high efficiency gas turbine, widely used in power generation today, burns the clean SynGas to produce electricity. Exhaust heat from the gas turbine is recovered to produce steam to power traditional high efficiency steam turbines.
The estimated cost of Klean’s 120 MW power plants including the syn-gas clean up systems and power islands will be approximately $2,300 per kW net power output sold to the grid with a net 95 MW would be exported to the grid. The projected capital expenditures are less than the expected for a large scale coal combustion based plants using the latest environmental technologies for emissions reduction. Klean estimates the requirement for 8 gasifiers which will process 1,100 tonnes of coal per day. The power plant will have a parasitic load of approximately 24 MW mostly due to the compression load to compress the syn-gas exiting the gasifier at 13 PSIG up to 400 PSIG, which is the required pressure for gas-turbines. The power plant is financed through a power purchase agreement from a large power wholesaler. Klean uses a modular, small scale, low pressure gasifier to convert coal into either syn-gas or liquids using its commercial grade systems which are extremely cost effective.[/one_third]
Our syn-gas that is produced from the gasification of coal or other feedstock is primarily consists of CO and H2 with low levels of CO2 and other impurities. The CO2 and other impurities in the syn-gas are then cleaned up downstream of the gasifiers.
Methanol or methyl alcohol has industrially been produced for many decades and when using it as a fuel it buns without emitting polluting substances such as NOx and Sox.
CTL kerosene is one of the primary fuel products that can be produce from a Klean a coal gasification plant using a modified Fischer-Tropsch process.
Another primary product from the Klean coal gasification process is high grade diesel fuel. CTL Diesel is an ultra clean high cetane diesel fuel with very low emissions due to the only having a trace amount of sulfur.
A Klean coal plant has the added benefit of being able to effectively sequester its carbon production.
