Gasification Technologies for Coal Conversion

Gasification Technologies

Gasification converts a solid carbon feedstock into synthesis gas by reacting it with a controlled, sub-stoichiometric supply of oxygen and steam. The output is a combustible gas — principally hydrogen and carbon monoxide — rather than a flue gas. Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) power plant technology builds on that chemistry, turning coal into syngas that is cleaned and then burned in a gas turbine, with the exhaust heat raising steam for a second, steam-turbine cycle.

Why the gas phase changes everything

In conventional combustion, contaminants end up dispersed in a very large volume of flue gas at low pressure, which makes them expensive to remove. In gasification, the same contaminants are concentrated in a far smaller, often pressurised gas stream, and are removed before the gas is used. That is the structural reason clean coal gasification is treated differently from end-of-pipe emissions control on a conventional boiler.

Combined cycle efficiency

The combined cycle element of IGCC exists to recover work twice from the same energy. The gas turbine extracts power from the hot, expanding combustion products of the cleaned syngas; the heat recovery steam generator captures what the turbine cannot, and a steam turbine converts it. Two cycles in series extract more useful output per tonne of coal than a single steam cycle, which is the efficiency case for IGCC.

Syngas as a chemical feedstock

Not every gasification plant is a power plant. The same synthesis gas is the starting point for methanol production, for synthetic middle distillates including diesel and kerosene or jet fuel, and for direct sale as an industrial gas. A technology decision therefore has to consider gas composition and conditioning requirements, not just thermal output — a gas that is adequate for a turbine may need substantially more treatment before it can meet a catalyst's tolerance for sulphur and particulates.

Selecting a technology

Feedstock properties drive the choice: ash content and ash fusion behaviour, moisture, sulphur, reactivity and particle size. Those properties determine whether a given reactor class suits the coal, how the ash or slag leaves the vessel, and how much gas cleaning is required downstream. Klean Coal provides specialised coal gasification consulting for design, commissioning and start-up, together with technology due diligence, so that these decisions are made on measured feedstock data rather than on vendor literature.

Technology is only half the answer

A gasifier selected correctly can still underperform if the gas-cleaning train, the heat recovery scheme or the solids-handling system was designed in isolation. The plant behaves as one system, and the technology review should treat it that way from the first assessment onwards.

Match the Gasification Technology to Your Coal

IGCC power plant technology turns coal into synthesis gas — but reactor class, gas cleaning and conditioning all follow from the properties of your specific coal.

Klean Coal provides specialised coal gasification consulting for design, commissioning and start-up, plus independent technology due diligence.
