Klean Group

Klean Coal is wholly owned by Klean Industries and operates as part of the Klean Group. Klean Coal's remit is clean coal gasification — Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) power plant technology that turns coal into synthesis gas, and the conversion of that syngas into diesel, methanol, kerosene and jet fuel, or its sale to market.

What group ownership provides

A coal gasification project needs more than a gasifier. It needs a feasibility study that a lender will accept, an engineering package, a construction route, independent due diligence and an operating plan. Through Klean Industries, Klean Coal clients reach an established service base covering feasibility studies, plant design and engineering, turn-key DBC and EPC delivery, due diligence services, and energy and waste audits — without assembling that team from scratch.

Transferable thermal conversion experience

Gasification, pyrolysis and other thermal conversion processes share a great deal of engineering: solids handling, high-temperature reaction vessels, gas cleaning and conditioning, heat recovery, and the discipline of commissioning a plant that processes a variable solid feedstock. Experience gained in one of those processes applies directly to the others, which is why a coal gasification business benefits from sitting inside a broader resource-recovery group.

Focus, not dilution

Group membership does not make Klean Coal a generalist. The specialisation is deliberate: specialised coal gasification consulting for design, commissioning and start-up, plant operations, project construction, training and staffing, commissioning and startup, and technology due diligence. Coal has its own feedstock behaviour, its own gas-cleaning duty and its own commissioning risks, and treating it as a sub-case of something else is how projects go wrong.

Working with the group

Clients can engage Klean Coal for a single defined assignment — a technology due diligence review, a commissioning plan, an operations assessment — or draw on the wider group for a route that runs from feasibility study through engineering and construction to a commissioned, staffed and operating plant. The scope is set by what the project actually needs rather than by what is easiest to sell.

One accountable counterparty

Projects that assemble a different adviser for every phase tend to lose information at each handover, and to discover during commissioning that an assumption made during the feasibility study was never carried forward. Keeping the technical thread with one group reduces that loss.

It also simplifies accountability. When the organisation that reviewed the technology also plans the commissioning and supports operations, there is no argument about whose assumption failed — which tends to produce more careful assumptions in the first place.
