Coal-to-Diesel Fuel Production
Coal To Diesel Fuel
Coal-to-diesel is one of Klean Coal's core products. Coal is converted by gasification into synthesis gas, the syngas is cleaned and conditioned, and the resulting hydrogen and carbon monoxide are synthesised into liquid hydrocarbons in the diesel range. The route is indirect by design — coal never has to be a liquid to become one.
Why diesel from syngas
Diesel remains the working fuel of heavy transport, mining, rail, marine auxiliary power and off-grid generation. Demand is durable and the specification is well defined, which makes it a practical first product for a coal gasification plant in a region that imports refined product. Where a country holds coal but little crude, producing diesel domestically substitutes a local resource for an imported one.
What the process demands
- Gas quality — synthesis catalysts are intolerant of sulphur species and particulates, so the gas-cleaning train is not optional.
- Gas composition — the hydrogen-to-carbon-monoxide ratio must be adjusted to suit the synthesis step.
- Thermal integration — synthesis is exothermic, and recovering that heat is central to plant efficiency.
- Product finishing — raw synthetic hydrocarbons are upgraded to meet the diesel specification the market requires.
Plant configuration
A coal-to-diesel plant is a chemical plant with a gasification front end, and both halves must be designed together. Front-end decisions about reactor class, ash handling and gas cleaning determine what the synthesis section receives; synthesis requirements determine how clean and how well-conditioned that gas has to be. Treating the two as separate procurement packages is a reliable way to produce a plant that cannot meet its nameplate.
How Klean Coal supports a coal-to-diesel project
Klean Coal provides specialised coal gasification consulting for design, commissioning and start-up, and supports owners through technology due diligence, project construction, plant operations, and training and staffing. For a coal-to-diesel scheme, due diligence is particularly important: synthesis technologies vary widely in how much commercial operating experience stands behind them, and that difference is the difference between a financeable project and an experiment.
Economics of the route
Coal-to-diesel economics turn on the spread between delivered coal cost and the diesel price in the market being served, adjusted for the capital intensity of the conversion plant. The route is most attractive where coal is cheap, local and secure, and where diesel is imported at a premium.
Because that spread moves, project evaluation should test it across a range rather than at a single price point, and should establish what the plant can do if the spread narrows — which is where the ability to shift output toward methanol or merchant syngas becomes valuable.

Convert Your Coal Into Synthetic Diesel
Klean Coal takes coal through gasification to cleaned syngas and on to synthetic diesel, designing the gasification and synthesis sections as a single system.
Coal-to-diesel sits alongside methanol, kerosene and jet fuel, and syngas to market in the Klean Coal product slate, supported by specialised gasification consulting.
